Zoo Miami closed due to tropical storm warning

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida. – Zoo Miami will be closed Friday and Saturday after a tropical storm warning was issued across South Florida.

Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill said the zoo must be closed to visitors to allow staff to “properly prepare the facility for the weather ahead.”

The zoo is expected to reopen on Sunday.

In past storms, like Hurricane Irma in 2017, the zoo has been closed for more than a month while repairs are being made and fallen trees cleared.

During that storm, employees said damage was limited to downed trees, fences and landscaping.

But in 1992, Hurricane Andrew did far more damage to the zoo, devastating much of it.
