Oh to be a fly (Yellowjacket) in this thread. Christina Ricc may not have much screen time with some of her Yellow jackets co-stars, but they make up for it in their text chain.

“We don’t work together very often. I only spent one day working with it Yellow-brown [Cypress]two days work with melanie [Lynskey]. Then most of my things were with me last year Julia [Lewis]. We hang out off the set,” Ricci, 42, told the exclusive Us weekly. “We have a text chain group for old ladies and I commute back and forth to Vancouver, but whenever I go into town the ladies and I have dinner and I meet up for drinks and we talk all the time and see each other as much as we can.”

The cast recently reunited at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, with the Showtime series receiving seven nominations. The psychological thriller follows four women connected by a 1996 plane crash that left their high school football team stranded in the Canadian wilderness for 19 months. Ricci plays the grown-up Misty, the group’s perpetual outcast – who is unpredictable and labeled a sociopath by most.

“Misty is really fun and fun to play because I really enjoy playing characters who aren’t bound by common societal constraints or any moral boundaries. She has very her own morals and that’s fun, and it’s also fun playing characters who don’t express their feelings in a traditional way,” Ricci said Us. “As an actor, I’m just always looking for something new and different and something I haven’t seen before. So the kind of freedom I get with Misty is pretty incredible. And besides, it was really wonderful to be nominated for an Emmy. That was great.”

Ricci, who was nominated for her work in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category, threw in a few extra details about Misty in Season 1 that weren’t originally in the script. Example one: Misty must have a bird.

90’s nostalgia

“In television there are always new scripts and your character is always changing, doing things that you might not have expected. So I contribute little ideas to her. But then there’s a lot of stuff that isn’t my input that the characters are well put together, but like with the bird, I didn’t even remember suggesting the bird,” she said, laughing. “But I think we just talked about different types of people, and at the time I was kind of like people keeping birds. Because I didn’t really know much about birds back then and I always thought it was weird. But now I’ve met the bird playing Caligula and I totally understand why people did it [them]. They are very affectionate.”

Example two: Misty’s favorite drink. “The chocolate martini she orders was my suggestion,” she added. “Little things like that along the way.”

For Ricci, the hit show has given her more opportunities to be creative. “Television is really different because it’s not the same as film, where basically a character is written and then the character is kind of handed off to you as an actor. Within the parameters of writing, you can kind of create who you really want,” Ricci explained. “What I see is – is the character something I’ve never seen before? Will I grow as an actor? I just always want to do things that I think are original and kind of unexplored. I mean, obviously almost every aspect of human nature was explored by art at this point, but you know, there are tiny little differences that can be made to create something new.”

“Yellowjackets” cast shone at the Emmys

She continued, “I like doing TV because you kind of spend more time with the character, and if you like the character, that’s fantastic and awesome. … I am growing and learning and changing and developing new muscles. And what I like about television is that even at my age, where I’ve been doing it for 35 years, it forces me to grow and develop new skills.”

Yellow jackets Season 2 is expected to premiere in early 2023.
