England’s place in the 2021-2023 World Test Championship scorecards after being penalized for speeding in the first Ash Test?
The Australian Cricket Team is moving ahead spectacularly and have dominated the 2021-22 Ashes series so far with the second Test underway at The Adelaide Oval.
England, by contrast, after being beaten by the Australians to a massive loss in the first test at The Gabba, Brisbane within four days, were once again forced to play the catch-up game after the Aussies posted 473/9 day in their first. session.
With much to ponder in the ongoing Test, the bruise from the Gabba Test reappears.
Not only did England lose the Gabba Test by 9 goals, but they were also eliminated 5 points of World Test Championship (WTC) to maintain the Speed too slow during the Test.
To add to their already existing green woes, the ICC have now stated that England are indeed short of 8 Over (instead of the original 5 Over) and will therefore be penalized an additional 3 WTC points to further slide down the scoreboard. WTC for 2021 -23 cycles.
How does England rank in the scorecards of the 2021-2023 World Test Championship?
For those not in the know, according to the ICC release of the first Brisbane Ash Test, a team is penalized one point each for being too short. “According to Article 16.11.2 of the Conditions of Competition of the ICC World Test Championship, a team is awarded one point for each team in the short period of time,” the ICC statement read.
England players were also fined 100% of their match fees following a breach of the Overslow Rate. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Officers charges players 20% of their match fee to each team to the extent of the omission.
“England fell short eight times (not five as short as previously announced) but were only fined 100 per cent of the match fee due to a regulatory limit. However, the number of points deducted for passing a penalty is not limited and must reflect the actual number of penalties taken by a team that did not meet the minimum requirement under Article 16.1.2 of the ICC Conditions of Competition, therefore they were penalized one point for each overtaking they were short”, the ICC statement read.
So England, who dropped to 6th place after being placed 5th in the WTC scoreboard, slipped another place down to 7th place after losing a total of 10 WTC points to errors. Score too slow.
England and India each added two points for the same reason after their first test at Nottingham during India’s tour of England in August.
