Worker says manager humiliated her for not wearing a bra

A woman’s story about a thrift store’s conflicting policy on bra straps infuriated Tiktok users and racked up over 1 million views as of Sunday.
“For the longest time I showed up to work in a shirt with no bra,” says Riley (@bappermoon), who works at a thrift store. “Not in the least inappropriate.”
Riley says everything changed one day when she said she had a handful of older customers in their 60s and 70s and “a lot of men” waiting at the checkout. The TikToker claims her manager then approached her and reprimanded her.
“All employees are required to have visible bra straps at work,” the manager allegedly told Riley. “You should know better than that.”
Riley says her boss then scolded her for not reading the policy in the employee handbook. The creator says he felt humiliated in front of all the customers.
“I never showed up to work without a bra again,” says Riley. Emphasizing her feelings in the caption, she wrote, “I was mortified.”
Recently, however, Riley said she noticed a newer employee wasn’t wearing a bra. She says she asked the new employee if she got the same dressing from supervisors.
But to Riley’s surprise, she says the new employee said the employee handbook has no rules about bra straps.
TikTok users who saw the clip were furious on Riley’s behalf.
“No employer should ever talk about underwear of any kind,” wrote @jazzy_marie_03.
Others shared Riley’s confusion at the manager’s attitude towards appropriate workwear.
“So all our lives we’ve been told that showing bra straps is promiscuous, but suddenly there’s a rule about showing them?” said @cherikana.
Others claimed they wouldn’t work much longer if they were in Riley’s shoes. As one user put it, “Like I would have stopped right away.”
The Daily Dot contacted Riley via Instagram message.
