Women walk out of nail salon without paying $250

The TikTok account of a Long Beach-based beauty salon says two women left the store without paying their $250 bill. The salon Top Coat Nails & Lashes (@topcoatnails.lashes) released the women’s now-viral safety footage last week.

The salon said it had “publicized” the alleged crime and that staff had no information on the women’s identities at the time of publication.

“Please do not make any assumptions about race/ethnicity as we are not interested ourselves,” the salon added in the video’s caption.

In the video, customers appear to be running out of the store while employees follow them. One of the workers is on the phone while others follow her.

In another angle of security footage, the two women, wearing face masks like many other staff and visitors, get out of their seats and quickly walk through the front door of the salon.

The Daily Dot reached out to Top Coat via Instagram DM.

In California, refusing to pay for services under $950 is considered petty theft, an offense punishable by fines and up to six months in prison.

Viewers who saw Top Coat’s post expressed their sympathy for the salon and their frustration at the alleged theft.

“If you can’t afford it don’t act like you really want to go to jail for not being able to pay for your nails?” wrote one TikTok user walking past Sophia.

“You’re moms should be ashamed smh,” wrote another user, adding that they frequented the salon and were upset that he was allegedly scammed out of payment.

Other commenters said they’ve seen similar behavior from customers at nail salons. “During Thanksgiving, it also happened to my nail salon, two girls ran out the door laughing, but we rushed for staff and got them,” user Han Tran wrote.

Some TikTok users were shocked by the cost of the nail services. “Honestly. 250 is crazy. What happened to the $25 sets?” wrote a user named Jess.

“I would have gone for $250. But not with a full set,” Katerine wrote. “I think the heist was reversed?” said another TikToker named Sarita.

“Everyone complains about the prices but forgets that inflation is rising and these nail technicians need to support themselves and their families,” wrote user Arianna.
