Woman says Walmart job offer was withdrawn after salary negotiations

In a viral TikTok video, a woman says her job offer was reportedly withdrawn by Walmart at the very end of the hiring process.

The video, originally posted by user Em (@cabbageloverr) on February 4, has managed to garner widespread attention, racking up over 591,200 views as of Wednesday.

In the video, the TikToker claims she was in the middle of the recruiting process for a position at Walmart and, while discussing her salary, received a series of total compensation and base salaries from her recruiter.

After going through the entire application process, she was excited to receive an offer but was shocked when the offer came from a completely different recruiter. She also claims that the compensation was not within the range originally granted.

“To clarify, the base salary was in that range, on the low, low end, and then the total compensation wasn’t in that range,” Em says in the clip. “So I shared with the recruiter, ‘I’m really excited for this role, I really loved this team, but I was anchored in the range I was originally assigned.'”

According to TikToker, when she tried to negotiate her salary requirements back to the range originally mentioned by the original recruiter, the company came back to her and said they couldn’t meet her requirements. They reportedly said the offer would then be passed on to someone else.

With her previous experience with companies like Apple, Square, and Plaid, Em says she’s never had an offer fully withdrawn during negotiations. “None of them rescinded the offer based on the salary I was asking for, which was within the original range the recruiter told me,” she explains.

The TikToker then reveals that she even tried to take the lower offer, but that the recruiter said it was too late. “I even said, ‘Can I just take the current offer?’ and they’re like, ‘No, we’re just not a match,'” Em recalls. “Like I’m literally coming down to meet you and we’re aligned now, but no, too late.”

Additionally, in the clip’s caption, Em explained that one of the workers encouraged her to negotiate for a higher salary. “Someone on the team even told me, ‘NEGOTIATE HARD!! You have room at the top!’”

In the comments, users received words of encouragement for TikToker and criticized Walmart, a company no stranger to the video platform.

“Thanks for naming her at the end! We should really share things like this so their credibility suffers too,” said one user.

“Walmart Corp is NOT. You dodged a bullet girl,” added a second.

“HR person here! I’m really sorry this happened, not only is this not normal it’s such a warning sign,” claimed another commenter.

In response to all the positive feedback the video has received, Em posted a follow-up video to say thank you to everyone but also on how to deal with the issues surrounding the ongoing tech layoffs and the struggles the Workers are currently facing in this industry.
