Woman says Hulu workers took her personal information to contact her

A woman on TikTok says a Hulu rep took her personal contact information to reach her after her customer service chat.

The TikToker (@aryan.strauss) posted a nearly three-minute video detailing the customer service experience. In the video, she says that Hulu “really needs to pull itself together” to deal with the offending employee and rectify the situation.

The TikToker explains that she canceled her Hulu subscription in early November, but missed the date she was supposed to to avoid being charged for the month. After being charged, she said she contacted customer service through Hulu’s website chat feature to ask them to refund her payment. The woman says she was unemployed for almost a month at the time and, as a single mother, couldn’t afford the subscription.

John, the customer service rep, was understanding and claimed to be a single dad who could relate to her struggles, the TikToker says. She thanked him for being “so real” and told him she plans to renew her subscription to Hulu if she can afford it. When their conversation ended, the TikToker says she didn’t think much of it — until John reportedly emailed her.

The TikToker says the Hulu employee emailed her personal email account from his own personal email account, meaning he had taken her contact information from her customer file.

“The reason this is alarming is that even though there was nothing in our conversation to include my personal information, he felt so encouraged,” the TikToker says in the video.

She adds that John has access to her billing address, which gives him where she lives, as well as her phone number and email address.

“He has all my personal information and he chose to use it,” says the TikToker. “So I guess how many other women has he done this to, and how else is he using my information?”

The TikToker says she spent hours on the phone trying to reach a supervisor to report John’s invasion of privacy. Every time her calls have been escalated to a manager, she claims the connection has been dropped.

The two female employees she spoke to before reaching a supervisor understood the concerns and concerns about John’s behavior, the TikToker says. But she had to “spell out” the problem to the male manager she was speaking to. She says she told him the situation was “dangerous” and “scary” and the issue eventually clicked with the manager.

First, however, the supervisor told TikToker that Hulu would “coach” John and give him feedback. That response was neither satisfactory nor appropriate for the TikToker, who said the feedback would show John exactly who reported him. And he allegedly had all of her personal information.

The TikToker ends her video by saying she still can’t believe the situation happened. She captioned the video, “Just stay professional, consent in all forms matters.”

Several viewers commented on the video and tagged Hulu’s TikTok account to call the company.

“@hulu BRUH!?” commented one viewer.

“@hulu what the heck?” commented another viewer.

Another wrote, “@hulu this is absolute stalking behavior.”

Some viewers couldn’t believe Hulu’s initial response shared by the TikToker.

“COACH him? You will COACH him that it is not okay to steal customer data and contact them outside of the working relationship?” said one user.

Another user wrote: “This is terrifying…how was he not immediately let loose for this? Isn’t that a violation of their policy!?”

In her latest update video, the creator says she hasn’t received a call or email from Hulu to let her know they’re looking into it.

“I want Hulu to reach out to me because we need to find a solution to this data breach,” she says in the clip.

The Daily Dot reached out to the creator via TikTok comment and Hulu via email.
