A South African woman has been killed by a great white shark.

Swimmers at Central Beach, Plettenberg Bay, had been enjoying an early morning swim today when the tragedy struck.

The 39-year-old woman who was suddenly attacked began screaming for help.

Others on the beach tried to come to her aid but could not save her.

The alarm was raised at the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and a lifeboat was quickly launched.

However, the woman’s body was soon discovered about 50 feet from shore.

According to the Mirror, an eyewitness told rescuers: “It was a bit cloudy but there was some sun and some people took an early bath as the temperature was quite warm.

“Then I just heard a lot of screams and saw people running out of the water.

“I thought it was a shark attack but I was pretty far away and then the lifeboat showed up.

“Then I heard a woman had been attacked while she was just two or three waves away so it was pretty shallow but they said there was nothing they could do to help her.”

Following this morning’s incident, holidaymakers have been urged to exercise caution in the water on Plettenberg Bay’s beaches.

This is the second deadly shark attack in the region in the past three months.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon told TimesLive: “This unfortunately follows a fatal shark incident at Central Beach on Sunday morning. The NSRI Plettenberg Bay and police were activated at 7:53 am following reports of a shark incident off the central beach.

“The Eric Stratford rescue boat was lowered into the water. Upon arriving at the scene, the body of what is believed to be a 39-year-old Cape Town woman was recovered from the water and taken to the beach.

“Condolences are sent to the family of the deceased woman.”

According to the authorities, a shark barrier could be erected in the water in addition to the erection of further warning signs.
