A woman made the find of a lifetime after bringing home a set of sofas from Craigslist and finding more than $36,000 (£28,700) in a pillow.

Vicky Umodu was browsing the online marketplace for furniture when she came across a free listing that included two sofas and a matching chair.

“I said, ‘Maybe it’s a gimmick. Let me call her,” Ms. Umodu, of San Bernardino, California, told ABC7.

But she learned it was a family who wanted to get rid of the belongings of a deceased relative.

She said: “I just moved in and I have nothing in my house. I was so excited so we picked it up and brought it in.

When she got home checking the condition of the furniture, she noticed something odd – one of the pillows was very bulky.

Initially thinking it might be a heating pad, Ms. Umodu unzipped the pad and found a stack of envelopes filled with thousands of dollars in cash.

She said, “I just said to my son, ‘Come on, come on!’ I yelled, “This is money! I have to call the guy!”

Instead of keeping everything to herself, she immediately returned the money, saying, “God has been kind to me and my children. They are all alive and well. I have three wonderful grandchildren, so what can I ever ask of God?’

When she returned the money, the family told Ms. Umodu that cash was hidden throughout the house.

As a thank you, they gave Ms. Umodu $2,200 to buy a new refrigerator — although she “didn’t expect a dime.”
