TROY, Illinois — An investigation is underway after a suspected domestic situation ended in the death of a woman and a home destroyed by fire.
The Madison County coroner has identified Susanne E. Tomlinson, 69, as the victim who died in the fire.
The fire occurred around 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Wood Thrush Street. After crews battled the fire for several hours, Tomlinson was found dead inside the home. The Troy fire chief tells FOX 2 that at least two people were pulled from the burning home on Thursday.
“This was a unique situation that was unexpected,” said Fire Chief Kevin Manso. “We’ve dealt with it as best we can, we’re still working on it.”
While first responders in Metro East were responding to the scene, Troy Police Department officers were alerted to a domestic disturbance in the area. Preliminary investigations led police to the victim’s address and discovered an active fire at the home.
“Small community, you never think something like this would happen. It’s really unfortunate,” says a neighbor via anonymity.
An autopsy is pending to determine the cause and manner of death. Prosecutors have not yet filed any criminal charges in connection with the investigation, and investigators have not yet revealed a motive.
The Troy Police Department, Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit and Madison County Coroner’s Office are among the agencies assisting with the investigation.
