FALMUTH, MASS. (WHDH) – Police found a dead woman and took a man into custody on Tuesday after a tense hour-long standoff near a primary school in Falmouth came to an end.
North Falmouth Elementary School went into lockdown around 10:45am after officers received reports of shots being fired at a house on Old Main Street, according to the Falmouth Police Department.
“We have been told by family members that there may be a victim inside,” said Police Commissioner Edward Dunne.
When officers approached, they said 24-year-old Tyler James Gibbs was waiting outside and was armed.
“At some risk to themselves, they entered the home in question to find a victim who they had been told had been shot,” Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said.
Neighbors were temporarily evacuated from their homes and students were released early from school amid concerns for the safety of local residents.
“They just said, ‘You have to come now.’ So I walked out and you see cops with guns, one pointing down at the house, so it was pretty scary,” neighbor Barbara Fagan said.
21-year-old Kianna Barrows was found dead in an upstairs bedroom at her family home.
Gibbs was taken into custody and the investigation remains “very active,” police said. He faces murder charges in connection with the incident, authorities said. Investigators say he and Barrows knew each other.
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, attached to the District Attorney’s Office, is conducting the investigation, with detectives from the Falmouth Police Department assisting.
