Woman claims driver masturbated, Uber terminated her account

A woman says Uber canceled her account after her driver complained before she could report him for masturbating in the driver’s seat during her ride.

The tweet posted by the Twitter user @nubianmatriarch on Tuesday it said: “So Uber terminated my account because a driver complained about me without hearing my side of the story.” Look at your driver so you cursed him and his mother.” She attached video of the driver reportedly masturbating in the front seat.

Warning: This video contains sexual content.

She replied in the comments that “after [she] confronted him saying he wanted to fight,” adding that she is now “talking to Uber and the police.”

Several commenters took issue with Uber’s inaction, with some sharing their own stories of being harassed while on an Uber ride.

“This is unfortunate behavior. So now, as women, we have to deal with drivers who don’t have damn impulse control. Uber should be ashamed,” commented one user. “Women around the world must boycott Uber until this driver is fired and given a ride credit apology.”

“Uber is awful, I had a driver who threatened to run me over and intentionally drove slowly through a deserted area to intimidate me and they didn’t even fire the driver,” said another. “They wouldn’t even refund me the money until I made a huge fuss. I’m sorry that happened to you.”

“You have the right to make a request for access under data protection law so that all information held about you is released, including statements made by the driver,” added a third party. “They cannot simply delete your account as this would violate their responsibility as information processors.”

Others urged them to file a complaint to stop the driver from harassing other passengers.

“Use this as evidence to tell Uber that you need the driver information to file a criminal complaint,” wrote one commenter. “There is a crime to be committed here.”

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Over a two-year period, nearly 6,000 driver-instigated sexual assaults were reported to Uber by users. Women who ride for the ride-sharing company are also reportedly victims of sexual harassment and assault, and claim reporting to Uber is of little help.
