Woman boycotts KFC after mom spat out chip that smelled like poop

A mother has vowed never to return to KFC after claiming her family was served a chip that smelled of feces.

Katie McAllister said she went to a branch in Torquay with her mother Carol and their baby daughter on February 2.

They were enjoying a popcorn chicken bucket for lunch when Katie watched as her mum suddenly spat one of her chips back into the lid of a coffee mug.

Katie said: “We have a snack box with popcorn chicken and fries. We sat down to eat it and my mom picked up what looked like a chip. She thought it looked a bit too crunchy for my daughter, so my mom ate it.

“As she put it in her mouth she said she just knew it wasn’t right and absolutely disgusting so she spat it out and put it on the coffee lid of the plastic cup and asked me to smell it.

“When I smelled it I almost threw up, it was absolutely disgusting.

‘[My mother] felt really sick, she wasn’t really sick but she could have thrown up by the time she went to bed just thinking about it. I’ve never smelled anything like it.”

Katie reached out to employees at the store, who she believed agreed the chip smelled foul.

She said: “I went to the counter and said, ‘I’m sorry, but someone has to smell this’ and [the assistant manager] smelled it and said, “Oh god, that’s awful.”

Katie then insisted that the chip be sent in for testing. The deputy store manager reportedly agreed, and the item was placed in a freezer at the restaurant.

But Katie claims to have returned to the fast food joint twice since, where she was told the offending bite remains in the freezer untested.

That annoyed her, not least because other people continued to eat at the restaurant, which is said to have recently been awarded five stars for food hygiene.

Katie says she collected the sample from employees at the KFC store and is trying to get the sample tested independently.

She said: “I went back the following week and spoke to the manager and she had no idea about it and that it was actually in the freezer.

“I was a bit upset about it and said, ‘This is a takeaway and something like this needs to be shipped really badly, they’re still eating here.’

“She took my details down and she said as soon as they’re sent they’ll let us know.”

She added, “I went back the week after to see if anything happened and the manager that day said, ‘We haven’t sent it off yet,’ and I said, ‘It’s almost now two weeks ago, it must be sent out”.

“I said, ‘You know, I’ll just take it because it needs to be tested, and I’ll take care of it myself’.” He said, “I apologize,” but people are still eating [there].

“My daughter is 19 months old so I was more upset too because it’s a kid’s snack bucket. It’s absolutely disgusting this place anyway. It’s disgusting, I will never eat there again.’

A KFC spokesman said: “We are sorry to hear that this guest was deterred from their meal, this is not what we want.

“Our Torquay restaurant recently received a 5 star food hygiene rating so we were surprised to see this and offered a full refund.

“We haven’t had any similar complaints, but we always encourage our fans to come forward when things don’t go to plan.”

According to data published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), there are more than 800 institutions in the UK with a zero food hygiene rating.
