With a cold snap predicted, when could it be warmer?

Stop the press! It’s cold in Britain.
Okay, not exactly surprising news that Brits aren’t basking in the sun in February. But it’s been a particularly grim start to 2023 after the snowfalls that closed schools earlier in the year and the freezing fog that has descended on London in recent weeks.
And while spring is technically just weeks away, warmer weather isn’t a guarantee.
In fact, a cold snap has been forecast for most of March. So when will it get warmer and what will the next few weeks bring?
When will it be warmer?
The prospects are currently not promising for those looking to ditch their winter coats and heavy layers.
In fact, some weather maps have warned that temperatures could reach -10 degrees in March.
Sudden stratospheric warming occurred near Scandinavia in mid-February – a weather event typical of this time of year.
The impact on the UK can be mixed – either causing extreme weather or… nothing at all.
An example of this comes in 2018 when it was accused of starting the beast from the east. But the following year exactly the same thing happened and the British felt nothing but a typical late February chill.
As it takes a few weeks to measure what might happen after Scandi warming, meteorologists are now getting more insight. And some maps show temperatures could plummet to negative levels during this latest cold snap, with the possibility of snow reaching almost every corner of Britain.
What is the forecast for March?
While we have to wait and see if the meteorologists get it right, BBC Weather has forecasts for the next few weeks.
They expect colder but drier next few weeks as we move into March.
The forecast states: “It will be quite cold, with temperatures near or slightly below the seasonal average, and there may be intermittent rain showers, some of which will be wintry over higher elevations.”
“The second week of March risks getting a little colder as the high pressure continues to move north and north-west, particularly towards Greenland. Sleet and snow showers are possible at lower elevations and there is a possibility that low pressure will push north from the continent, bringing heavier precipitation.’
“A similar pattern is likely to continue through the end of March.”
So when will it be warmer? We expect April at the earliest.
Don’t shoot the messenger.
