Nick Kyrgios has sealed his place in the Wimbledon semifinals with an impressive 6-4 6-3 7-6 win over Chilean Cristian Garin.

It’s now the best singles Grand Slam run ever for the fiery Australian and he will next face world No. 4 Rafael Nadal or 11th place Taylor Fritz for a place in the final.

Kyrgios’ run at the 2022 Championships has been the subject of controversy, with the 27-year-old facing charges of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari over an alleged incident in December last year.

After his victory over Garin, Kyrgios said: “I never thought I would be in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, I thought this ship had sailed.

“I didn’t tackle great things earlier in my career and I thought I missed that window. I’m really proud of how I came back here with my team and put in a performance.

“Everyone on my team plays an important role. To be in the semifinals of a Grand Slam, I’m pretty happy! I felt like I was playing a lot on the backfoot, he (Garin) is a damn good player and I got lucky with a couple of break points.

“I’m going to take that and prepare for my next game. I don’t even want to think about the semifinals! There is much to do. My dad cooks me dinner and we watch a movie and relax.”

Kyrgios has also been involved in various high-profile altercations with journalists, referees, linesmen, fans and fellow players throughout the ongoing tournament.

The world No. 40 adds his win over Garin to victories over Brandon Nakashima, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Filip Krajinovic and Britain’s Paul Jubb.
