A prescient thought? Will Smith opened up about protecting his family in an interview taped ahead of his headline-grabbing performance at the 2022 Oscars.

“I wasn’t as unhappy as everything kind of lost its luster,” explained the Oscar winner. “I think it is humanity’s natural journey when we realize that the material world is totally, utterly and utterly unable to sustain our happiness.”

As a host David Letterman Clarifying that Smith felt nothing could give him satisfaction “except the essentials of protecting yourself and your family,” the Philadelphia native replied, “You can’t protect your family, can you? That’s not real.”

The “Miami” rapper went on to say that he’s learned to accept the fact that all of his achievements could vanish in an instant. “Protection and safety are an illusion,” he added. “You have to learn to live with reality [at] any moment it can all be gone in a second. So with this reality how can you be here? And how can you be happy and be here?”

“When I was 9 years old, I saw my father beat up my mother and I did nothing,” Smith told the former late show Host. “And that just left a traumatic impression of me as a coward.”

That Wild, wild west star found he was able to use his emotional revelations in his work. “Life is so exciting for me right now because I’m able to reach out to people in a different way than I ever have before, mostly because of my pain,” he said. “I’m really ready to immerse myself in my art in ways that I think will hopefully fulfill me and help the human family.”
