Why Mundy comparisons embarrass star Freo O’Meara’s recruitment

Star Fremantle recruit Jaeger O’Meara says he’s embarrassed when people rate him as an equal replacement for champion docker David Mundy.

Mundy retired at the end of last season after a glittering 376-game career.

The 37-year-old’s elite skills and decision-making made him stand out from the crowd, and he will be remembered as one of the greatest players of all time to don a Dockers jersey.

O’Meara’s arrival at Fremantle will help offset the loss of Mundy as both are big-bodied midfielders.

But O’Meara, who has played 143 games at Gold Coast and Hawthorn, doesn’t feel he’s earned the right to speak in the same group as Mundy.

“I was a bit embarrassed talking to David Mundy and I came in and filled his role,” O’Meara told the club’s website.

“I’ve watched David’s career and he was an incredible player at Freo Footy Club and will go down in history as one of the best players at the club.

“So I was a bit embarrassed about this chat (that I can replace it).”

O’Meara was forced to spend a long time as a forward at Hawthorn last year after manager Sam Mitchell opted for the youth midfield.
