Why Man Utd were ‘unconvinced’ after initial talks with Darwin Nunez | Soccer

Liverpool completed the signing of the 22-year-old earlier this month in a deal worth £85m plus add-ons.
United have also been keen on signing the Uruguay international, with Erik ten Hag keen for the club to add more firepower in attack – with 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo being the club’s only consistent goalscorer last season.
Ten Hag was reportedly furious after the club missed out on Nunez. But the latest claims suggest United had already gone cold ahead of the Dutchman’s arrival at Old Trafford to finalize a deal.
According to The Athletic, United had arranged a meeting with Benfica president Rui Costa to discuss a move ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final game against Benfica.
However, that meeting was postponed after Costa and his family contracted food poisoning while celebrating his birthday.
United are said to have been very skeptical of this reasoning, with the report claiming that “United officials needed some convincing and may have taken it as a snub”.
Although there was a lot of interest in his services, Nunez has since made it clear that opting to move to Anfield was an easy decision.
“I’ve played against Liverpool and seen them in a lot of Champions League games and that’s my style of play.
“There are some great players here and I think it will suit my style of play here.
“Like I said, I’ve watched quite a lot and it’s a very big club and I hope I can give everything I have to help the team.”
