United’s shortlist also included Spain head coach Luis Enrique and Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui, but Ten Hag and Pochettino emerged as the two standouts.
According to widespread reports on Wednesday night, United have now decided that Ten Hag is their preferred candidate ahead of Pochettino following their talks with the Ajax boss.
Pochettino was initially thought to be the favorite to succeed Ralf Rangnick as manager, but ESPN report that United have been put off by the difficulties the Argentine has faced at PSG, particularly following their Champions League elimination.
It is claimed United are reluctant to appoint a new manager who would be seen as a ‘failure’ in his final role.
It is also understood that United are unwilling to pay PSG’s demand for Pochettino’s compensation fee, which is said to be around £15million.
Last month, former United midfielder Nicky Butt had urged the club to opt for Pochettino.
“I would do anything to get Mauricio Pochettino as manager,” said Butt, who gave up his role as head of United’s first-team development last year FourFourTwo.
“He’s proven himself in the Premier League, he’s young and enthusiastic, his style of play would suit United and his backroom staff seem turned on
‘ I met him a couple of times at Spurs’ training ground and had lunch. You would want to play for him.”
However, United’s hierarchy believe Ten Hag is a better fit with the club’s current structure.
The 52-year-old has a year left on his contract with Ajax this summer and United would only need to pay around £2million in compensation to bring him and some members of his backroom team to Old Trafford.
United have already held talks with Ajax over Ten Hag’s compensation package.
Ten Hag is also reportedly considering the appointment of Rene Meulensteen, Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant, as his right-hand man at United.
