It seems that people who have had 13 former sexual partners make the best lovers.

Less, and their lack of experience will likely result in some awkward fumbling, while more suggests they see each conquest as just another notch on the bedpost.

In a poll of 1,000 men and 1,000 women, 52 percent thought 13 former flames were the ideal number, while 73 percent said someone 18 or older was off-putting because it made them feel like an addition to the list.

And men are more likely to sleep with someone on a first date, with 77 percent saying they would, compared to just 39 percent of women.

The survey was conducted by illicitencounters.com, which bills itself as a married dating site.

Its spokeswoman Jessica Leoni said: “A high number of sexual partners deters many.

“Nobody wants to be just another notch on the bedpost.

“Similarly, we don’t want to date someone who has little experience — it’s a recipe for awkward fumbling.

“Thirteen is the ideal number, guaranteeing that someone between the sheets is experienced, adventurous, and open-minded.”

Researchers also found that 70 percent of men and women lie about how many ex-boyfriends they have.

Men are more selective than women, with 59 percent saying high numbers of sexual partners make them less desirable, compared with 46 percent of women.

And just 31 percent of respondents said they wanted to know about a new partner’s past love life.
