carry his legacy. After the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 Black Panther director Ryan Coogler decided that his Marvel character would also die and a new Black Panther would be born Wakanda forever. (WARNING: Spoilers ahead.)
“You consider everything, when something like that happens it’s like, ‘I don’t think I can come back and do another one, I don’t think I can do that. I don’t think there should be another.’ You live through all extremes,” Coogler said on the November 4 episode of “Wakanda Forever: The Official Black Panther Podcast.”
The director briefly considered recasting T’Challa, but knew it would be unfair to any actor to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have to follow Boseman, who died of colon cancer in August 2020 at the age of 43.
“For us in the world we’ve created, we wouldn’t have believed it if anyone else was him. No matter how good the actor was, we didn’t have the truth to do a good job,” he explained.
Therefore, it was decided that T’Challa would die off-screen in a very similar manner to Boseman. in the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the audience learns that the king didn’t tell his family he was terminally ill until it was too late. His sister Shuri (Letizia Wright) was in the lab trying to recreate the heart-shaped herb that gave him the Black Panther’s superhuman powers in the 2018 film. However, she did not have enough time to figure out the correct chemical composition, and her brother died.
T’Challa’s younger sister is the true star of the film. “We started out with this notion of who would be hit the hardest by their loss,” Coogler said diversity in the cover story of Wednesday, November 9th. “Shuri had never lived a day without him. He’d always been there, so she’d be at her most unattached when he died.”
She’s not just the leading lady – Shuri is the new Black Panther. However, it took a while for the scientist to accept that she should take on her brother’s mantle.
After T’Challa’s funeral, the film jumped ahead a year. Shuri still refused to acknowledge her grief. Determined to break tradition, she refused to become the Black Panther. She wasn’t even sure if she believed all of Wakanda’s spiritual stories about ancestors and life after death.
Her faith was tested when her mother, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) was killed by Namor (Tenoch Huerta). Overcome with grief and determined to avenge her mother’s death, Shuri set about recreating the heart-shaped herb and finally got it working. She refused to be buried in the sand as usual, opting instead to stay in the lab just in case she needed a defibrillator. She allowed Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) to create the blend and watch over it as it undergoes the transformation.
After drinking the purple liquid, she passed out and went to the ancestors. It was here that T’Challa visited his late father in the 2018 film. Shuri thought she was seeing her mother – but Ramonda wasn’t the last to take the herb. That was Erik Killmonger (Michael B Jordan) who surprisingly shows up to test the new hero. She wanted to avenge her loved ones, much like him. Was she just like the villain?
Shuri awoke from her dream-like state, shocked and angry because she believed the herb was not working. When she struck and knocked over a mannequin, she flew with a force far beyond what she expected. She is now the Black Panther.
She constructed a new suit and led the Wakandans into naval battle with Namor and his people. Shuri pushed Namor away from the water and into a desert to dry up the villain who lives in the ocean. However, looking back on Killmonger’s confrontation, she also recalled her mother telling her to show the world who she really is. She decided not to kill Namor but to show him mercy and allow him to yield.
It seemed like Shuri was the only one left to become the Black Panther, but the film’s ending revealed that she has another living family member – T’Challa’s son.
He and Nakia secretly had a child, and he’s the reason the spy has stayed in Haiti since Thanos’ attack. Nakia didn’t want to raise him in the spotlight of the Wakandan royal family. The little boy’s name is Toussaint in Haiti, but he has told Shuri a secret: his real name is Prince T’Challa, son of King T’Challa of Wakanda.
Shuri didn’t seem upset that she was being kept in the dark (even Ramonda knew about the child before she died). Instead, she seemed overjoyed that her brother’s legacy would live on.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now in cinemas.
