When arts workers or charities strike, something is wrong in Britain.

As of February, an estimated 500,000 people from both the public and private sectors have already gone on picket line over wages and working conditions, and there is little sign of backing down.

Union leaders are announcing new strike dates weekly, with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) expected to announce the first continuous 48-hour action seen as an escalation of its wage dispute with the government.

So who is on strike today and how will it affect you?

Office for Work and Pensions (DWP)

Ministry of Works and Pensions officials start the week on the picket lines,

Those at the Stockport Contact Center and Bolton Benefit Center are following suit.

It comes after the government last year announced plans to close more than 40 DWP offices, with the Toxteth Jobcentre site earmarked for closure.

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) says the action is a “response to the government’s lack of movement on its demands for pay, pensions and job security”.

DVLA members working in the Output Services Group at Ty Felin and Morriston in Swansea are taking part in today’s strikes.

It is part of the PCS union’s national industrial action over wages, pensions, jobs and dismissal conditions.

The strike will last five days, ending on Friday, having started in November 2022.

British Museum

Staff at the British Museum in London will stand on the picket line for seven days from today.

Public access to the tourist attraction is halted as more than 100 security and visitor services workers finally shut down their tools.

The strike takes place during half term, when many families may be going to the museum.
