White House confirms Biden aides found classified Obama-era documents in two Wilmington locations – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) — President Joe Biden’s staff have found documents with secret markings in two locations at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, the office of the White House Attorney said in a statement Thursday.

The documents were in a storage area in the garage and then in an adjacent room, the statement said.

Biden raised a question about the statement following comments on the economy Thursday morning. When asked by a reporter what he was thinking about keeping classified documents in his garage “next to his Corvette,” Biden said, “My Corvette’s in a locked garage, OK? So it’s not like they’re sitting on the street.”

The documents were found after a search of the President’s homes in Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. No secret documents were found in Rehoboth, the statement said.

The documents were found “among personal and political papers,” the statement said.

Biden’s attorneys completed their review of the Delaware homes on Wednesday night.

“As in the case of the Penn-Biden Center, the Justice Department was immediately notified and attorneys arranged for the Justice Department to take possession of these documents,” the statement said.

A person familiar with the situation said after the statement was released that in the case of the classified documents originally discovered at the Penn-Biden Center, Biden’s attorneys first notified the National Archives — not the Justice Department — which in turn notified the Justice Department.

Biden’s attorneys followed “proper protocol” by first notifying the archives with the first batch of classified documents, the person said, but because the Justice Department subsequently got involved and the president’s attorneys then liaised with them, the attorneys second informed the Ministry of Justice.

The White House said it would continue to cooperate with the Justice Department’s review.

Biden largely read from the same prepared statement from the attorney’s office when speaking to reporters Thursday morning.

CNN reported on Wednesday that Biden’s legal team had found another batch of classified documents in a search that began after classified documents were found at his former think tank office in Washington in early November.

The discovery of the classified documents in his former office in November sent alarm bells ringing in the White House, where only a small circle of advisers and attorneys knew about the matter. Attempts were made to search other locations that may have held documents from Biden’s time as vice president.

CNN previously reported that the first batch, discovered when Biden’s personal lawyers were packing files at his former private office, contained 10 classified documents, including US intelligence materials and briefing memos on Ukraine, Iran and the UK.

Some of the secret documents were “top secret”, the highest level of classification. They were found in three or four boxes that also contained unclassified papers covered under the Presidential Records Act, CNN reported.

Classified records should be kept in secure locations. And under the Presidential Records Act, when a government ends, White House records are supposed to go to the National Archives.

Ahead of new reports Wednesday about the second batch of government materials, the White House declined to answer a number of critical questions about top-secret documents from Biden’s vice-presidency discovered in a private office last fall, citing an ongoing review of the Ministry of Justice .

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday declined to answer a number of questions about the documents, citing the Justice Department’s ongoing review of the matter. She could not say who brought the documents to the office or whether other documents were found. Nor could she say if an investigation was underway to find other possible documents, or when the President had been notified of the documents’ discovery.

“This is being looked into by the Department of Justice. I will not go beyond what the President communicated yesterday,” Jean-Pierre said, repeating the statement in so many words during Wednesday’s press conference. “I will not go beyond what my fellow White House Counsel have also shared with all of you.”
