The kids go back to School for the summer semester and the house is finally peaceful again – but with three bank holidays in May and half a semester, it won’t be long now.

Unfortunately, travel chaos ensued over the Easter holidays, affecting many people trying to get away, with one bus driver describing the scenes in Dover as “harrowing”.

But another free week is just around the corner – here are the important dates.

When is the next half?

Mid term dates are usually the same in England and Wales but the advice is to check with your local authority (or school if your child is in a private school). It’s quick and easy with your zip code on the government website.

In the summer semester schools in England and Wales will close for half the semester as a general guideline Monday 29th May to Friday 2nd June.

Monday 29th is the spring holiday.

They will reopen in the second half of the summer semester Monday 5 June.

In Scotland, there is no summer semester as the term ends much earlier but schools are closed for Spring Bank Holiday on May 29th.

As regions across the country have different operating days, it’s best to use your postcode to check the Scottish Government’s website.

Likewise, in Northern Ireland, the summer semester ends earlier, so there is no half semester. The dates are listed on the Northern Ireland Government website. 29 May is also a bank holiday in Northern Ireland.
