Combine this miserable weather with the plethora of Easter goodies already hitting shelves and people might just be counting on spring, brighter days and all the joys that come with the season of new beginnings.
And who doesn’t love the Easter holidays that take place every April?
So, when will spring come – and what’s the deal with the equinox?
Here’s everything you need to know about spring 2023.
When is the first day of spring 2023?
There are two schools of thought when it comes to defining the first day of spring. It depends on whether you use the meteorological or the astronomical definition of the seasons.
The meteorological method divides the year according to the Gregorian calendar into four seasons of three full months each.
consequently, Spring begins on March 1st and lasts until May 31st each year, with summer beginning on June 1st.
The astronomical season depends on the date of the vernal equinox, which means that the date is later and may vary slightly from year to year.
In 2023, the vernal equinox (also called the vernal equinox) will fall. Monday, March 20th.
Astronomical spring then lasts until the summer solstice, which occurs in 2023 on Wednesday, April 21.
What is the vernal equinox?
The vernal equinox was used by early civilizations to keep track of the seasons.
Equinoxes get their name from the Latin for “same night” and mark the only two points in the year when the equator is the part of the earth closest to the sun, with both the northern and southern hemispheres sharing sunlight equally.
For six months each year, either the northern or southern hemisphere faces a little more toward the sun, bringing with them the warmer temperatures of spring and summer.
The autumn and spring equinoxes mark the point at which the two hemispheres reverse, while the summer and winter solstices indicate that the sun is reaching its northernmost and southernmost points.
While the solstices are commonly understood to be rooted in ritual traditions and celebrations, the equinoxes also have meaning for many people.
In Britain, Stonehenge is the most famous meeting place for druids and pagans during the equinoxes and solstices, who traditionally gather to watch the sun rise.
