the The FIFA Men’s World Cup draw takes place today, April 1, when fans will finally find out which sides will face off later this year.

The 32 nations will later compete in the 22nd FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December.

Football fans know the big tournament happens every four years – but when was the World Cup and who won?

When did the World Cup first start?

The first World Cup took place in Uruguay in 1930.

The host country actually won the tournament, beating Argentina 4-2 to take home the prize. The USA came third and Yugoslavia fourth.

Since then, the FIFA Men’s World Cup has been held every four years, except for 1942 and 1946 when the tournaments were canceled due to World War II.

When the tournament returned in 1950, Uruguay won for a second time.

What is the World Cup trophy made of?

Accordingly The CBC, The World Cup Trophy, “features a base of two layers of semi-precious malachite” and has the winners and year engraved on the bottom.

According to CBC, the trophy, designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, is 36.8 centimeters high, weighs 6.1 kilograms and is made of solid 18-karat gold. It shows two people holding up the earth.

The current World Cup trophy is the second of its kind. Brazil were allowed to keep the trophy permanently after winning the tournament for the third time in 1970.

However, the trophy was stolen from an exhibition at the Brazilian Football Confederation’s headquarters in 1983 and was never recovered.

The rules have since been changed and World Cup winners are only allowed to keep the trophy for four years and must return it before the next tournament. You will then receive a gold plated replica for safekeeping.

When is the World Cup draw?

The World Cup draw will take place on April 1, 2022 at around 17:00 BST. The draw will take place in Doha, Qatar.
