Five Tory MPs are still in the running to become the leader of the Conservative Party – and our next Prime Minister.

Now that Boris Johnson has resigned, either Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss, Kemi Badenoch, ex-Chancellor Rishi Sunak or Tom Tugendhat will replace him in the top post.

Only two candidates will end up and we won’t find out the winner until September 5 – but politically engaged Brits can scrutinize any would-be PM beforehand in a range of upcoming TV debates.

So when will the debates be televised? And where can you see them?

Here’s everything you need to know.

When is the Tory leadership debate?

The first debate on the Tory leadership contest is broadcast tonight (Friday, July 15) at 7:30 p.m.

It will be a 90-minute debate moderated by Channel 4 News broadcaster Krishnan Guru-Murthy, with all five candidates answering questions from a studio audience.

How to watch TV

The debate will be streamed live on Channel 4 from 7.30pm – you can also stream the debate via the Channel 4 website.

Louisa Compton, Head of News Current Affairs, Specialist Factual and Sport at Channel 4, said: “We are delighted that all five candidates have agreed to take part in the Channel 4 leadership debate and to answer questions from constituents across the UK.

“This debate will be a must-watch for those who want to know more about our next Prime Minister and what she or he stands for.”

The second debate of the Tory leadership contest will be broadcast on ITV on Sunday 17 July at 7pm.

Sky News will broadcast the third debate live on Tuesday 19 July at 8pm and will be moderated by news anchor Kay Burley.

At this point it is expected that after a vote on Monday 18 July there will be fewer candidates left in the leadership race.
