WHATSAPP’s two billion users have been warned that they could run into some pretty serious problems if they send certain types of messages.
According to reports, sending restricted or banned content through the app can not only result in fines but can even get you in trouble with the law if reported.
According to mint.com, the biggest concern for WhatsApp users should be those who share images or videos that violate copyright laws.
If the original owner of the copyrighted material learns about it and files a complaint, the person who shared it may be forced to pay damages.
Likewise, sharing inappropriate content could lead to legal ramifications, especially if those on the receiving end made a fuss.
Sending too many messages could also get you in hot water, the Daily Record reports, getting you banned and unable to use the app to contact friends and family.
WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messaging app.
And as of January this year, it boasts a whopping two billion strong user base, sending over 100 billion messages daily.
The notion that simply sending the wrong type of message can result in fines or legal damages comes as a huge shock to users who use the platform to send memes and videos on a daily basis.
The news comes as police issue a formal statement warning users of a scam that could cost them millions.
Dubbed the “friend in need,” the scam often begins with “Hi mom/dad, it’s me” and involves parents pretending they’re talking to their kids.
Often it will be an apology, like texting on a friend’s cell phone or from a new number.
But the scammer behind the scam will then demand a large sum of money to pay an urgent bill.
According to Action Fraud, the scam was reported 1,235 times between February 3 and June 21 this year, with the total cost to victims so far amounting to a staggering £1.5million.
If you receive any of these types of messages, WhatsApp recommends that you report them as spam, which is possible within the app.
It’s also a good idea to block the person who sent it to you.
