WhatsApp users can now respond to messages in individual and group chats with a variety of emojis.

Mark Zuckerberg shared the news of the feature’s launch in a Facebook post this week.

There are six reactions available, with more to follow, according to the Facebook boss.

However, the emoji reactions come with limitations.

You can only add one reaction per message, which is pretty common for the Meta’s own apps like Facebook and Instagram.

Unlike Facebook Messenger, you can’t change the reaction emoji, although there are more options than the single like on Instagram.

The emoji reactions common to apps like Slack and Telegram will be an important feature going forward as WhatsApp expands the size of group chats from 256 to 512 members.

But how do you react and reply to messages on WhatsApp? Here’s what you need to know:

You can now respond to messages on WhatsApp

Like Facebook Messenger, you can now react to messages you receive on WhatsApp and others can react to the messages you send.

To react to a message, you simply have to press and hold it for a few seconds to select it.

The reaction bar will appear with six different reactions – a thumbs up, a heart, a laughing face, a shocked face, a crying face and a thumbs up.

Just click on the reaction you want to use and it will appear at the bottom right of the message.

Users can view all reactions to a message by tapping the reaction emoji below the message.

However, it is not possible to hide reactions or reaction counts, so use caution when doing so.

To remove your Emoji reaction to a message, you can just long press on the message and tap the emoji you reacted with to remove it.

Recipients can see your reaction before you remove it or if the removal was unsuccessful. WhatsApp has warned that you will not be notified if removing a reaction is unsuccessful.

Perfect for a busy group chat when you want to be very clear who you’re replying to, you can reply directly to a message on WhatsApp.

To do this, you need to mark the message as if you want to react to it.

Then you need to click on the left pointing arrow in the top right corner of the app to reply.

The right-pointing arrow forwards messages to other people.

When you click the reply button, the message you are replying to will appear above the usual text box.

You then just type and submit your reply, and your message will appear in the thread below.
