What’s next on day four of the NHL’s COVID-19 outbreak?

Cases keep happening.

After Tuesday and Wednesday, dozens of people were added to the NHL’s COVID-19 roster, another 16 players were included in Thursday’s protocols.

One of the most important stories revolved around Colorado Avalanche, who placed Andre Burakovsky and JT Compher on protocols about two and a half hours before taking down the Nashville predators. Half an hour before the ball was released, goalkeeper Darcy Kuemper entered the procedures. Then, a few minutes before the match started, Cale Makar was informed that he had joined the protocols.

However, the game continues.

Sportsnet of Elliotte Friedman reported the Avalanche players were given the opportunity to vote on whether the game should go ahead, while the Panthers, according to striker Anthony Duclair, was not selected the same.

The Montreal Canadians also had an interesting situation on Thursday, when the Quebec Ministry of Public Health asked the home team to be empty in the Bell Center stands for the game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Across the NHL, a total of 91 players, coaches and team staff are using COVID-19 protocols.

Other leagues are no stranger to COVID-19 struggles right now. With the holidays approaching, the NFL, NBA and their respective player associations have agreed to rework protocols to increase testing and cover-up requirements, among others. In the NFL, 125 players are currently participating in protocols while NBA has 40 players.

With all but one NHL’er vaccinated, the vaccine has clearly done its part in keeping the players symptom-free. But with the way the virus continues to spread through organizations, one has to ask: when did the NHL step in and pause the game?
