The races on Friday 13th May and Saturday 14th May can be watched for FREE by anyone standing by the riverbank.

On his websiteThe Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta bills itself as “a premier collegiate rowing championship offering a unique experience for all athletes, coaches, spectators, sponsors, the sport of rowing and our community.”

Also known as “North America’s largest collegiate regatta,” the annual race brings hundreds of athletes, crowds and detours to Fairmount Park with the closure of Kelly Drive.

When are the races held?

The first of more than 175 races for this year’s competition is expected to start around 7am on Friday. The races take place on Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Dad Vail is yet to release the full race schedule (weather permitting).

You can access parking spots off Reservoir Drive and then take free shuttle buses down to the river. And you can follow the action for free. The grandstand is located at 2200 Kelly Drive.

How can I travel to the regatta by public transport?

SEPTA’s 32 and 38 buses will drop off passengers near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where shuttle buses will be available, race organizers said.

All diversions from Kelly Drive will be posted, but you can plan to avoid the area entirely.

You can use the Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) as an alternate route. (The entire section of MLK Drive is closed for recreational use during the day on Saturday.)

With MLK Drive closed for a mix of construction and recreation, expect plenty of extra noise on I-76.

How much do you know about the Dad Vail Regatta?

The regatta, established in 1934, is the largest collegiate rowing event in North America, drawing thousands of athletes from more than 100 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada, organizers said.

“The Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta was started by two men with rowing connections at the University of Pennsylvania. The individuals were ‘Rusty’ Callow and Lev Brett”, Race The organizers announced this on the event’s website. “Callow was then a trainer at Penn and laid the groundwork. Brett was seen as an architect. Their goal was to host a collegiate regatta to develop crew programs.”

The circuit is used in dozens of Olympic-length 2,000-meter races and presents crews with “unique” challenges, Hanna said.

Looking for the full Dad Vail experience? Rowers Village is the place to be, said Hanna.
