‘What they did is wrong’: Everett students march on City Hall as city council resigns over racist messages – Boston News, Weather, Sports

EVERETT, MASS. (WHDH) — Hundreds of students walked out of school Monday to protest outside Everett City Hall, demanding accountability after a city councilman and a mayoral adviser resigned over racist messages.

“There are City Council members who don’t know how to filter themselves and have many ideas that we will not support,” Senior Nicholas Pereira said. “We came here to raise our voice and educate people about what is right and wrong because what they have done is wrong.”

Councilman Anthony DiPierro announced his resignation after private messages containing racist images were released, and Mayor Carlo DeMaria said his communications director will also be stepping down. In a statement, DiPierro suggested that others besides him should resign as well.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and encourage others who participated in this hurtful, insensitive banter to also do the right thing and resign from their positions in city government,” DiPierro said.

“They are making comments here that shouldn’t be made, they … they should be held accountable and that starts at headquarters,” senior Ismael Zamor said.
