What is an endoscopy?

An endoscopy is a procedure in which the gastrointestinal tract is viewed by doctors through a fiber optic camera called an endoscope.

A small tube is inserted – either through natural body openings or strategically planned, small incisions.

Its length and flexibility often depend on which part of the body the doctor wants to look at.

The endoscope helps doctors examine areas that are difficult to see outside of the body: for example the esophagus, stomach, large intestine or small intestine.

Endoscopies are usually performed under sedation to ensure patient comfort during the procedure.

What types of endoscopies are there?

Although there are many types of endoscopies, doctors usually separate the procedures based on their location – e.g. B. upper or lower body.

Upper body endoscopies are usually performed through the mouth, while lower body procedures are performed through the anus.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “Where safe and appropriate, it has been shown that scheduling elective same-day upper and lower endoscopic procedures can help reduce healthcare costs and avoid potential harm from repetitive sedation and blood draws.”

Types of endoscopies include:

  • Colonoscopy: Here a colonoscope is inserted through the anus to see the length of the colon and colon
  • Gastroscopy: Where a gastroscope is inserted through the mouth to view the stomach and duodenum (the beginning of the small intestine).
  • Arthroscopy: This involves inserting an arthroscope through a small incision over a joint to look at specific joints

A colonoscopy is a procedure that was first introduced in 1969 and is commonly used to detect colon cancer early.

However, according to The New York Times, “In a recent study that analyzed the experiences of nearly 80,000 patients who had the procedure, pancreatitis was not even described as a risk of colonoscopy.”

The outlet spoke to Dr. Avinash Ktwaroo, a gastroenterologist specializing in endoscopic procedures at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who told them:

“That would be an extremely rare complication.”

He added, “So rare that it’s at the so-called case report level, which means it’s maybe one in a million colonoscopies.”
