In its original form, the Rainforest Cafe was home to more live animals than just the fish most of us remember. Based on Atlas Obscura, the first cafe to feature tropical birds, tortoises, iguanas and baboons. Oh, and a butterfly greenhouse. Pretty wild, isn’t it? This is also all in addition to tropical fish.
Despite the cafe’s popularity, it’s no surprise that it’s an extremely expensive product. This is due to lights, fog machines, electronic engines, animals and paid professionals to care for animals, both live animals and machines. All of this is on Usual restaurant expenses.
Unfortunately, things changed when Landry’s Investors Inc. bought Rainforest Cafe in 2000. Most of the live animals, except fish, have been removed from the cafe. Although many of its locations have closed over the past decade, you can still find Rainforest Cafe at several Disney locations (via Mental Floss).
