What does ULEZ mean? | British News

It originally covered parts of central London, but later this year it will be extended to all boroughs and operate 24 hours a day.
The program may not be popular with many people, but some have spoken out about the environmental benefits – assuming the projected figures and the Year One Report prove accurate.
But what does the acronym ULEZ stand for, as simple as it may seem? Let’s explain…
What does ULEZ actually mean?
The acronym ULEZ is pretty simple and simply stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone.
ULEZ is not the only one operating as there are also Low Emission Zones (LEZ).
The main difference between LEZ and ULEZ zones is the type of vehicles covered by the regulation.
The LEZ applies primarily to larger diesel-powered vehicles above a certain weight – these include trucks over 3.5 tons, coaches over five tons and large vans, minibuses or motorized caravans that were registered before 2006.
Some lighter four-wheel drive vehicles and trucks registered as new before January 1, 2002 also fall under the LEZ.
There are also Clear Air Zones (CAZ) designed to encourage road users to choose vehicles that meet specific emissions standards.
There are Clear Air Zones in operation in:
- Birmingham
- Bradford
- Bristol
- Glasgow
- Portsmouth
- Sheffield
- Tyneside.
