West Valley cop shoots man suspected of alcohol abuse

Police have released few details about the shooting.
(West Valley City Police Department) A West Valley City police officer shot dead a DUI suspect Thursday night.
A DUI suspect was hospitalized after he was shot dead by a West Valley police officer Thursday night.
According to police, the officer called at 10:31 p.m. to report that he was attempting to pull over a driver in a white van, who appeared to be driving intoxicated, at 2400 S. Redwood Road. He “did not negotiate the turnoff” from the Redwood Road to State Road 201 eastbound and “went off the road.” At 10:34 p.m., the officer reported that he had shot the man.
Police have released few details about what happened: “At one point the officer dealt with the suspect and shots were fired.” The man, whose name has not been released, was injured and taken to a hospital. His condition is unknown. A gun believed to belong to the suspect was found at the scene, police said. The officer was not injured.
Police did not say if the suspect fired a gun or how many times the officer fired.
The shooting is being investigated by the West Jordan Police Department.
Thursday’s shooting was the eighth police shooting this year in Utah, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
