West St. Man Paul was sentenced to 31 years in prison for shooting his girlfriend in early 2020 – Twin Cities

A man in West St. Paul was sentenced to more than 31 years in prison on Friday for fatally shooting his girlfriend in the head outside her apartment building.

Steven D. Buford, 22, last year pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on September 4, 2020, kill Lauren Summer Koffi-n’guessan, 22 years old, and also in the first degree, robbery aggravated by attempting to break into a woman with her two young children.

Dakota County Judge Michael Mayer sentenced him to 380 months in prison for murder and 54 months in prison, to be served concurrently, for robbery.

“I am delighted that Mr. Buford has pleaded guilty to committing these violent crimes, thereby saving those affected by his actions from the stress of a trial,” said Dakota County Attorney, Kathy Keena said in a statement Friday. “My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Ms. Koffi-n’guessan.”

The criminal complaint gives the following account:

Around 9:30 p.m. that day, officers were dispatched to the Eagle Point Apartments on the 2000 block of Christensen Avenue in West St. Paul after a disturbance in the house involving Koffi-n’guessan and Buford. A witness said a man, later identified as Buford, was acting erratically and had jumped from the apartment building’s second-floor balcony. He was seen arguing with a woman, who was later identified as Koffi-n’guessan.

While officers were searching outside the building, they heard a gunshot. They found Koffi-n’guessan lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. She died.

They saw Buford running through the parking lot. Officers then heard a woman screaming and saw her standing outside her car holding an infant, which was later identified as Koffi-n’s 15-month-old son. ‘guessan. Buford in the back seat of the car. The woman’s 7-year-old son was standing next to her and her 12-year-old son in the car. Officers detained Buford without incident.

The woman told police she had just parked her car in the parking lot when she saw Koffi-n’guessan and Buford arguing. She heard a loud bang, then Buford ran to her car and “thrown an infant at her,” the indictment reads. Buford jumped out of her car and landed her 7-year-old son in the back seat. Buford shouted, “Come on guys, let’s go!” and waving a gun. She told her children to get out of the car, but only one ran out.

After his arrest, Buford told officers the gun was in the car, where they found a snub-nosed revolver.

At the time of the murder, Buford was on supervised release after being convicted of robbery and firearms in Scott County in 2016.
