‘We’re just very different personalities’: Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admits that his relationship with Red Bull counterpart Christian Horner ‘probably will never improve’

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says his rivalry with Red Bull boss Christian Horner is completely real.

Toto Wolff and Christian Horner had a heated exchange during their time as team owners of their respective skins. However, tensions between the two sides have escalated to a whole new level in 2021.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have been together in the Drivers’ Championship all year. Even Red Bull as a team challenged Mercedes for the Constructors title. Horner has previously said that he is very proud of his team, as no one else can push Mercedes so far in the turbo-hybrid era.

Verstappen and Hamilton go into the final race of the season on points. Meanwhile, Red Bull is 28.5 points behind Mercedes in Constructor’s rankings.

On the latest episode of the F1 national podcast, Wolff opened up about his rivalry with Horner.

“It’s completely genuine, because there’s so much at stake.” he say.

“Those are ambitious people, ambitious teams that are fighting really hard for this championship. And once you are in it, you will no longer be able to create space for others, at least for me. “

Mercedes boss sometimes gets caught up in what Horner says

Toto Wolff says he doesn’t expect to have a casual relationship with the Red Bull boss. He feels that a lot is at stake and both supremes are fully committed to taking their teams to the top.

He also said he was ‘taken away’ by what he heard Horner say.

“I don’t have negative or positive emotions, but I’m trying to really stay there. I sometimes get in the way when I hear comments that upset me, but only twice this season.” the Austrians continued.

“The rest is no emotion, neither positive nor negative.”

“Everyone is just trying to protect the interests of the team. We have very different personalities. [in] how we can perceive the world.

“I try to validate what I believe to be true, and he does it his way. Maybe in the future we can laugh about it, but not today.” he concluded.
