Lando Norris feels that his team has been unlucky with issues beyond their control before the end of 2021.
Norris has had a great start to the 2021 F1 season. The McLaren driver has been on the podium four times, with the best result of his young career coming at Monza. At the Italian GP, Norris finished second behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
Ricciardo and Norris gave McLaren their first 1-2 since 2010. Things seem to be going well for Team Woking in their attempt to finish third in the Constructors’ Champions.
However, ever since they left the paddock in Lombardy, things have gone downhill for them and Norris in particular. The best position Norris could secure after Monza’s surges was in span 7.
He did so on three different occasions; in Sochi, Turkey and at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. A late tire puncture at Yas Island last week saw the young Englishman fall to order.
He was vying for 3rd place in that race, eventually being knocked out by his former teammate Carlos Sainz. After the Abu Dhabi GP, the 22-year-old shared his thoughts on the brutal end of 2021.
Lando Norris says it’s not the second half of the season that McLaren wants
Norris started by admitting his mistakes in situations where he could have gained valuable points for his team. “Of course. I made a few mistakes, Brazil for me was a big mistake, costing me,” he told Motorsport.com.
“But apart from that, we’ve been very unlucky with the punctures, with the problems and crashes, whatever. Just not the second half of the season that we would have liked. We deserve more than that. I think the team has done a much better job than I imagined.”
It’s P4 for the team in the Makers Championship.
We can be very proud of what we’ve accomplished in 2021, including that incredible day at Monza.

“And I feel like I’ve done a much better job than it looks, we were just unlucky, that’s all. But I think I’m still very satisfied with the way I did it. Everything for me to improve again, but I’m happy, it’s still my most successful season. ” he added.
After their brutal end, McLaren ceded 3rd place on the Constructors leaderboard to Ferrari. The Italian team finished with 323.5 points compared to McLaren’s 275.
