The Oscars will kick off Sunday night with their first show since, well, you know. The awards show hasn’t been relevant for a long time, but after last year’s shocking incident, suddenly they are. Anyone else get hit? Probably not, especially since they now have a “crisis team”. But they’re still big enough to get prime real estate SNLwho awarded them the Cold Open.
The opening sketch finds Marcello Hernandez and Heidi Gardner as Access Hollywood Host Mario Lopez and “Maria Menounos or Kit Hoover”. They speak to a number of people, including the new chief of security, the “notoriously calm and sane” Mike Tyson (Kenan Thompson).
“This year all nominees got tasers, all seat holders got guns and Jimmy Kimmel got a flamethrower,” said Tyson of Thompson. He said that Will Smith (who hasn’t been allowed back for a while) was given an Apple AirTag, so “we know exactly where he’s going to be at any given moment — unless of course he’s changed his pants and then he could be anywhere.”
There are also appearances from nominee Jamie Lee Curtis (Chloe Fineman), Michelle Williams, a Jewish acting coach (Sarah Sherman), and Bowen Yang as George Santos posing as Tom Cruise. When told that “You’re not deceiving anyone,” Yangs Santos replied, “Except me, and now I’m in Congress.” Sorry, I have to be everyone, everywhere at once.”
You can see the sketch in the video above.
