Winner: The White Lotus
The acclaimed dark comedy, which follows both hideous and compelling characters at a luxury resort – the first season is set in Hawaii and the second in Sicily — was hailed as a sharp social satire. Sydney Morning Herald and Age Culture editor Michael Idato said it was “equal parts soap opera and Shakespearean comedy/horror” and gave its second season 4½ stars. Jennifer Coolidge also won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance on the show.

Best Film – Drama
Winner: The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg also received the Best Director award for this personal project about a young boy, his family and his love of film. Film critic Sandra Hall gave the film four stars, saying it wraps complex parental relationships and a high school film into “a deceptively simple narrative that flows so smoothly it’s easy to miss its intricacies.”

Best Film – Musical/Comedy
Winner: The Banshees by Inisherin
The dark tale of two friends who inexplicably stop speaking on a small island off the coast of Ireland in the 1920s also earned Colin Farrell a win for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy and a Globe for Best Screenplay. Our film critic Jake Wilson gave it 3½ stars and said it had “a quaint, otherworldly flavor reminiscent of chronicling a quarrel between hobbits”.

Best Picture – Animated
Winner: Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro
Another passion project from a famous director, Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro showcases the filmmakers’ Mexican heritage as they tell the ancient tale of a wooden boy in a newly interpreted light using stop-motion technology. Age and Sydney Morning Herald Film critic Paul Byrnes gave it four stars and called it “fascinating”.

Best Picture – Non-English Language
Winner: Argentina, 1985
The Spanish-language film tells the story of the aftermath of Argentina’s bloody dictatorship that ended in 1983. He follows a group of lawyers as they try to bring the military leaders to justice, which eventually leads to the junta’s trial – one of the biggest wars of prosecution since the Nuremberg trials.

Supporting actor gongs – for shows not already mentioned – were also given to the cast in ozarkwith Julia Garner (Netflix), Black birdwith Paul Walter Hauser (Apple TV) and Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverwith Angela Bassett (still in Australian cinemas).

Babylon – which won the Globe for Best Original Score and starred Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt – is yet to be released in Australian cinemas. Indian action film RRR – which won the award for best song Naatu Naatu – is available on Netflix.
