Wanda’s MCU journey has been more than Elizabeth Olsen expected

Wanda Maximoff has been a part of the MCU for a while, first in the credits of Teased Captain America: The Winter Soldier next to her twin brother Pietro. The character has been through a lot, and actress Elizabeth Olsen has proven to be a fantastic and adaptable actress, especially as she had no idea where this role would take her when she first signed on.

Olsen’s full-length debut for Marvel came in Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which Wanda starred opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Pietro, which didn’t make it past his first film. The actress does a phenomenal job of portraying her grief at the loss, something that would sadly become a hallmark of her character.

The 33-year-old has since starred in several MCU films, which have only poured out more misery in the form of the death of her love Vision, which led directly to the events of WandaVision. Speaking to ComicBook, Olsen discusses the development of Scarlet Witch.

“I mean it was a ride I wasn’t expecting, I got used to just taking a lead and just showing a few colors of it and just helping the story and this movie as a whole. And then WandaVision, I must be all colors of all rainbows. This was an amazing opportunity, but also an amazing opportunity to remember the playfulness and the ability to fail, and there’s such a freedom we had during filming that has informed me now on how to address it . And to be with it Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessI was first when I heard about it, I was like, ‘Really, we do WandaVision and then we do that?’”

Go from WandaVision in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a big change, something that was also addressed by Olsen.

“Even so, I think it was an incredible opportunity to have an audience on her side for seven hours and then throw her on a journey where you could possibly ask her where she’s from. And I really had a great time trying to create an evolution of her and her power and her acceptance and her confidence in who she was supposed to be and that influenced her decision making. And then I always with Sam [Raimi], we’ve always tried to go back to find their humanity, even through it. And so it was a fun line to split between.”

The miniseries was a giant leap for the actress, who has mostly played a smaller role within the MCU as a whole, but now took center stage and had a chance to really shine. It was brilliantly done and earned Olsen Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswe see a fully realized Scarlet Witch, one who is more aware of her powers yet comes to terms with her past.
