NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart Inc. announced Monday that it has signed a deal with Paramount Global to offer the entertainment company’s streaming service as a benefit to subscribers of the discount retailer’s mail-order subscription service.

The move is part of the country’s largest retailer’s effort to better compete with Amazon’s Prime membership program, which offers a range of perks.

Beginning in September, Walmart+ subscribers will have access to the Paramount+ Essential Plan, which includes advertising and offers original dramas like 1883 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds along with recent preschool franchises PAW Patrol and blockbuster films like Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and live sports.

The cost of Walmart+ remains $98 a year, or $12.95 a month, the retailer said. It includes free shipping on items and discounts on gasoline. An Amazon Prime membership costs $139 per year or $14.99 per month and includes the Amazon Video service, original programs and free games, among other things.

Walmart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has never disclosed the number of registered members, but said Monday that membership has been growing monthly since it launched in September 2020.

The terms of the deal with New York-based Paramount Global were not disclosed.
