Walmart customer shows cameras tracking buyers and items

A user’s TikTok video has gone viral after showcasing Walmart’s security system, alarming viewers on the platform.

Last year, a user went viral after claiming that Walmart’s security system is so sophisticated and pervasive that it can see everything customers do, including what they read on their phones.

Now another user has sparked controversy after showing the store’s high-end security system in action.

In a video with over 5.9 million views on Friday, TikTok user Aubrey (@tht.slowsubi) shows off a security camera feed.

“You guys better watch out,” Aubrey writes in the caption that overlays the video. “Walmart isn’t playing anymore.”

In 2021, The Verge reported that Walmart had used facial recognition software and specialized AI to detect unscanned items at the self-checkout lane.

As of 2019, this AI recognition software is used in over 1,000 stores, according to Insider.

“The cameras track and analyze activity at both self-service checkouts and checkouts with Walmart attendants,” writes author Hayley Peterson. “If a potential problem arises, such as an item being moved past a checkout scanner without being scanned, the technology notifies the checkout clerks so they can take action.”

Aubrey later posted a follow-up explaining the system. She claims the cameras are able to track customers around the store and “scan any items that you pick up.”

“I was working in a grocery store in 2016 and these cameras were able to detect unscanned items going out the door,” Aubrey claims. “Just so you guys know, Walmart does that too.”

In this video, she claims that Walmart could wait to prosecute someone for shoplifting until they stole an amount that would net them a felony for the crime.

It’s unclear if this is actually true, as this claim has been repeated across stores like Target and other retailers.

However, many were quick to share their thoughts on being the subject of such ubiquitous surveillance technology.

“Looks like I’ll be shopping with a face mask and sunglasses on,” wrote one user.

“They do everything but hire cashiers!” exclaimed a second.

“They’ve got all that but still not taking apple money??!??!!!” a third questioned.

We contacted Walmart through the media relations contact form and Aubrey through Instagram and TikTok direct messages.
