A pervert with a “leg fetish” filming women’s skirts in Tesco has been caught by his club card, a court has heard.

Ian Betts was spotted bending in the aisles next to a 16-year-old girl before his phone “lit up” for an upskirt snap in Mold, North Wales.

The 61-year-old was “quickly grabbed by the collar of his jacket” before the girl and her father were alerted, the city’s crown court jury heard.

The father demanded to see what was on his phone and Betts was marched to the customer service desk where he was arrested.

Police found two hard drives containing more than 2,900 inappropriate images and videos. They were able to cross-check the dates they were taken with dates on his Tesco Clubcard to prove he was in store at the relevant times.

Other women and girls were attacked by Betts in the same shop, including four adult women and three other schoolgirls – the youngest being 11 years old.

When questioned by officers, he blamed “obsessive-compulsive disorder” and a “leg fetish” for the lewd behavior.

The court heard from the 16-year-old, who said she felt paranoid about going out in public and only felt safe when her family formed a “bubble of protection” around her.

A mother of another victim said she felt heartbroken for telling her daughter what Betts did to her to preserve her childhood innocence.

A Tesco worker said the supermarket was meant to be a “safe place” and management had “felt ill” about the incident.

Betts, of Carmel, Flintshire, pleaded guilty to recording under clothes, taking indecent pictures, taking indecent pictures, possessing banned pictures and attempting to go upskirt.

Judge Rhys Rowlands described upskirting crimes as “particularly distasteful”.

Betts was jailed for two years and nine months and received a 10-year sexual harm prevention order barring him from entering the downtown store.

Investigators DC James Moult and PCSI Erin Shawcross added: “Ian Betts is a dangerous criminal who preyed on women and girls as they went about their daily activities, unaware that they were being targeted and filmed for nothing but his own sexual.” Satisfaction.

“We would like to commend the victims and their families for their continued support of this investigation and for the courage they have shown in submitting their reports under such difficult circumstances.”
