Waffle House Worker shows ‘Marking System’ in Viral Tiktok

A Waffle House employee is using the company’s “marking system” to let chefs know how customers order their food.

“Last time I talked about the bookmarking system, people were mad,” says TikToker @hotsoupandcracker at the beginning of his video. TikTok has received more than 368,000 views since it was posted 6 days ago.

He went on to explain that cooks share information with each other through a system that arranges certain spices and other items on a plate, as a way to reduce errors in verbal communication. spoken or written.

“The jelly pack at the bottom is messed up,” he offers as an example of how egg-based orders are prepared in advance. “If you get a pack of mayonnaise, face down, it will light up, face down will be good.”

Additional arrangements include various placements of cheese slices, napkins, and even hash brown sprinkles.

“Two pieces of cheese next to your slash means it has cheese and you can combine the marks together, to form a gentle cheese with cheese,” he said, offering a plate with two slices of cheese on the left, a pack of apple butter on the bottom, and an upside down pack of mayonnaise on the left.

Needless to say, most restaurants don’t operate this way, and people have been stoned by how complicated the system seems.

“Coming from a decades old chef, this is the dumbest and most inconvenient thing I have ever seen,” @kevingrant2 wrote.

“Why don’t they use the point of sale system and printer in the kitchen like every other restaurant?” another viewer asked.

“They have to decrypt DaVinci just to get a plate,” joked @jay_aye_why. “The food took all night to get on the table.”

But Waffle House fans were quick to point out that clearly the system worked for them. The brand has thrived for decades, its locations are usually open 24 hours a day, service is quick, and they have a reputation for being able to stay open even in the worst disaster conditions.

“Waffle Houses are so effective, FEMA uses them as a emergency indicator,” @Emjay061 noted. “I don’t think we can criticize.”

While @hotsoupandcracker’s original video focused on egg dishes, Waffle House uses the same method for other items on the menu. TikToker shared a follow-up video showing a schematic explaining the system.

It’s certainly complicated and serves as a reminder that critics of service industry workers really don’t understand how much effort and skill that kind of work requires, whether they use the Waffle House method or not. Are not.

As one viewer said, “So all the teachers who told me I was going to end up working at Waffle House had high expectations of me.”
