Waffle House Worker Reveals 20% To-Go Fees

Restaurant fees are relatively common. A restaurant may choose to charge customers more for large groups and substitutions, or in some cases the restaurant may charge a service fee for orders regardless of group size.

However, a little-discussed area of restaurant billing is “to-go charges” — charges added to a take-out order.

While these fees are recognized on a bill, many don’t realize they’re even being charged that fee, as a recent video by TikTok user and Waffle House contributor Briana (@nanaspage26) explains.

In a clip that has over 284,000 views, Briana shows an invoice showing the items ordered for $13. In the end, the bill for the to-go order is $15.60. The discrepancy arises from two separate 10% charges; One is a “service fee” and the other is a “deployment fee”.

While some may blame inflation, to-go fees aren’t a new development at Waffle House.

In 2018, the chain confirmed in a tweet that it charges additional fees for to-go orders. However, the fee was given as only 10%.

“Waffle House charges a 10% service charge on all takeout orders,” he said tweet read. “Prior to implementing this policy, we found that most other businesses in our industry either factor fees into their daily menu prices or use a separate menu for takeout orders.”

However, it seems that a 20% fee is becoming more common. A Reddit post from earlier in the week noted that the practice was widespread at Waffle House locations, with users speculating that the cost increase could be an attempt to encourage customers to eat out or as a way to lower the cost of the Provision of takeaway containers to offset .

Back on TikTok, users expressed their dismay at this discovery.

“And that’s why I don’t tip when I leave,” wrote one user.

“Service fee Provisioning fee, what the heck is that. How is that legal?” asked another. “I’m done with places like this, tipping is out of control. People have to boycott.”

“I always tip, but if you include a to-go you don’t get a tip,” repeated a third.

However, some were understanding about the fees.

“I’m surprised more places don’t do this!” shouted one user. “All these to-go containers also cost money. I would pay for it with no worries and tip as well.”

“Best bang for your buck and you’ll be stingy when it comes to paying the takeout fees? I would pay double and still be cheaper than mcd,” claimed a second.

“Have to pay for the take-away container, WH Essen is so good and cheap that you can still tip even with take-away,” offered another TikToker.
