Before the doors opened Saturday morning inside the Dairy Barn at Expo New Mexico, staff cleared tables and prepared vaccination stations.
“It takes incredible collaboration and communication between us as the state,” said Goldie Yandle with Premier Medical Group.
Yandle said it is preparing to give 1,000 injections a day, and the demand for the vaccine is high right now. Thanks to new variations and expanded eligibility for children ages 5 to 11, the state has delivered 76,000 doses in the past 7 days.
“When you’re in an enclosed area, even if you’re 6 feet apart and you’re washing your hands, and you’re hiding the virus from spreading no matter what you do, that’s going to happen. We’ve seen a a slight increase in positive cases, which of course will directly affect the increase in demand and our need for vaccinations,” Yandle said.
Yandle says one of the reasons it’s hosting the event is because some people are having a hard time scheduling vaccination appointments.
“Finding availability, it’s hard to get in. I know there are pharmacies offering this service and doctors’ offices but their supplies are limited and their time is limited. more time while we can provide larger capacity, larger quantity of vaccine.”
The vaccine clinic at Expo New Mexico is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and runs through Monday, December 20.
Walking programs are welcome but you are encouraged to sign up on state website.
