Video shows driver hitting cyclist in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Shocking video shows a driver hitting cyclists in Fort Lauderdale over the weekend.

Video was captured Saturday in the area of Oakland Park Boulevard and A1A. As the driver turns at the intersection, several cyclists are seen hitting him.

The incident came just days after new safety measures for cyclists were introduced in Miami-Dade County, such as: B. New bicycle barriers that now line parts of the Rickenbacker Causeway.

It is one of several safety changes made after two cyclists were hit and killed by a driver on May 15 while riding on the bike lane near the William Powell Bridge.

“We talked about if nothing is done it will happen again and unfortunately it happened,” said Maribel Reyes, advocate for bike safety.

Miami-Dade County also installed new signs warning drivers to be vigilant while reducing posted speed limits.

Bike safety advocates say these measures have been needed for a long time.

“You know, the county could and should have done something earlier,” Eli Stiers said. “Two other people had to die, you know, to elicit any response from the district.”

Police are still investigating the Fort Lauderdale incident.

Anyone with additional information about the driver is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
