Wolff contacted Verstappen for a potential Mercedes until earlier this year, but the relationship fell apart.
F1 world champion Max Verstappen has revealed that Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff texted him congratulating him on his first world title win. “Toto sent a message. He congratulated me on my season and said I deserved to win. That of course was very good for him,” the 24-year-old said. The relationship between Verstappen, his father, former F1 driver Jos Verstappen and Wolff deteriorated throughout the season, especially after the British GP. This can be considered as an easing of all bitterness that occurred between the Red Bull team and Mercedes when the season has passed.
At the race, Verstappen and Hamilton collided, causing Hamilton to be fined by the managers, however, it was a 51 G collision, and the Dutchman not only withdrew from the race but was hospitalized . Hamilton despite the penalty still won the race and celebrated the victory excitedly in front of his home crowd, which the Verstappen family did not appreciate. In fact, Red Bull also called Hamilton an amateur racer and the social media backlash over the situation caused a lot of racism towards the seven-time world champion which Mercedes blamed for Red Bull.
Since the British GP, Hamilton and Verstappen once again came together at Monza and then had many quarrels until the end of the season. When Max Verstappen was in F3, Wolff wanted to hire him as a young driver but was turned down by Red Bull, who offered the opportunity to join F1 in their junior Toro Rosso team at the time. In fact, it was revealed that Wolff had been in contact with Verstappen’s for a potential Mercedes until earlier this year, but the relationship fell apart because of the title battle.
Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until 2023 but he has outlined his desire to stay with the team for another decade. While all of this was happening, Mercedes also protested the final outcome of the Abu Dhabi race with the FIA and also accused Verstappen of overtaking Hamilton in the safe car time. It has been revealed that Hamilton has asked Wolff to withdraw the rallies, which is probably why he also texted Verstappen recognizing him as world champion.
